A newly reviewed standard providing unambigous terminology and metods for documentation and analysis in salmonid aquaculture.
Developed by scientists and fish farmers through an Norsk Standard-led project, the standard introduces terminology and methods for documentation and analysis across sites, regions, and companies — benefiting farm staff, fish health professionals, researchers, and regulators alike.
This standard is managed by Standard Norge
The standard should be used by authorities, suppliers, and all actors in the value chain who benefit from comparable data and consistent terminology, regardless of the type of aquaculture.
Key applications include:
Accurate descriptions are essential for all trade in goods and services. Unified terminology reduces the risk of misinterpretation and streamlines communication across the entire value chain
The standard NS 9417 Salmon and Rainbow Trout – Unified Terminology and Methods for Production Documentation provides key definitions in the aquaculture value chain (terminology).
Subjects like calculations, conversions, and description of selected methods for measurements documenting production in phases such as hatchery, juvenile fish, grow-out fish, slaughter, processing, and transport.
The standard described optimal depths for environmental sampling (temperature, oxygen and salinity) for situational awareness.
Fish feed and economics are also included in the standard. NS 9417 forms the basis for consistent data registration across different facilities and the use of standardised terminology throughout the value chain.
