AquaCloud Sensor Data Standard

Initiated by the industry in a large consortium in 2017, and worked on, developed and maintained by AquaCloud, with Lerøy in the forefront of implementation and rollout. We aim to be the preferred standard, by and for the aquaculture industry.

This standard is for everybody who wants to be compliant with the preferred environment data standard in aquaculture, and/or get access to shared data and insight and broader context for a location.

Frictionless standardization

Enabling environment data in the same standard, with the same quality parameters is both necessary for data driven operations, and supply chain efficiency. It is also the only way to enable more insight, and achieve more sustainable production and growth.

From device plugins and software components to cloud standardization tools and services through compliant partners, we can support any data owner with almost frictionless standardization and sharing opportunities.

Enables Equal Access

This sensor data standard will enable the aquaculture industry, and others providing or using environment data from the coastal areas, to work seamlessly together on data without the need for cleaning data or expensive integration work.

This is an industry standard created and maintained by the industry through AquaCloud and its partners. Now supporting the most vital data from both sea and land phase aquaculture operations.

With our sharing solution we can also promise everybody historic hi-res timeseries, to use
for enhancing contextual insight, and providing better modeling.

AquaCloud partners will get acces via normal dashboard and API.

Seamless Integration

We provide standardization components and services for data owners and users, enabling all data from the Norwegian cost, to be comparable and usable in creating insight. Our main goal is to enable suppliers who already deliver data services to AquaCulture companies, to provide compliance and enable sharing via AquaCloud. For those dedicated to other standards, we will provide a two-way cloud based translation to enable participation in environmental data sharing, and access to new possible insights from the broadened context this can give.

Need access to others data at your location? Our sharing services for data from compliant sources, AquaCloud Sensor Data Network, is open for all.

Use the Standard /
Become Compliant

Suppliers should decide to support the level of the standard that is most relevant to its current product portfolio. Compliance can be delivered all parts of the data value chain, from sensor level to just a data stream, where AquaCloud hosts the standardization engine.

Device Level (input plugin)

The Device level includes the physical sensor in a fish cage, and any AQ-SDS compliant sensor plugin that the sensor might need, that generates sensor data. Be it a temperature measuring device, or a feeding system.

Infrastructure Level (IoT Hub)

The Infrastructure level includes the MQTT Open IoT Hub, and the docker container server running within or on a separate server for AQ-SDS compliant plugins, that receives the sensor data from the various devices, and distributes standardized data to AquaCloud Data Platform. The standard allows for data from different suppliers, collecting sensor data from any location/cage. Data can also be collected from cloud endpoints.

Cloud Level (API / Data stream)

The Cloud level in the standard is where the sensor data is stored, and accessible through the AQ-SDS API compliant endpoints. This is the primary data access point, as all historical data is stored in the cloud, the IoT Hubs is only in charge of structuring data into semantic models and providing the current state of the system.

New sensor input, or data output are easily supported through a plugin based architecture, using common software, components and protocols. Our solutions partners are here for you.

Licensing and Costs

Service available spring (Q2) 2025, with commercial and non-commercial license agreements

Normal commercial use (data owner supporting standard in operations and for sharing) is defined by a commercial license agreement, with a cost of 500 NOK/M related to each of location.

For testing purposes you can access and try our Open Source Software Componenets for free. For testing via supplier or Cloud API conversion, please see list of AquaCloud Solutions Partners.

Research Institutions and non-commercial users have access to a special license agreement.
