Innovation in the Ocean Industries

About this project:

Project number:
Status: Finished
Duration: 01.01.2023–31.12.2023

Partners:

Marienholmen RASlab, Saite, Clarify

Technology development project in Ocean Innovation Norwegian Catapult, co-funded by SIVA.

The project has progressed as planned, and a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) of the AquaCloud Sensor Data Network has now been installed at Marineholmen RASlab. The solution enables data flow from the facility’s sensors in the tanks, via PLC systems in the test facility. The Sensor Data Standard has been extended with defined support for land-based environmental data, manual measurements, and includes a plugin for Siemens PLCs as input. Demonstrations have also been conducted using Clarify’s analytics services.

Innovation in the Ocean Industries, Work Package 2: MVP

Objective:
To explore and define potential test services for companies developing digital solutions for the aquaculture industry, based on the AquaCloud Sensor Data Standard.

Solution:

  • Plugin enabling data transmission via IP from Siemens PLC
  • Local IoT Hub for internal network-based distribution, with AC Aggregator and AC Distributor for cloud integration
  • Standardization of data from Marineholmen RASlab according to the AquaCloud Sensor Data Standard, with access for sharing via AquaCloud
  • API for real-time data streams
  • IoT Hub and plugins shared via GitHub (AquaCloud repository) as open-source components
  • Licensing terms have been assessed for the open-source version, along with the foundation for a commercial license agreement, enabling stakeholders to acquire the solution as SaaS instead of deploying it independently

Benefits:

  •  Simplified and more cost-effective testing of new sensor technologies, using existing or easily adaptable plugins for the open-source IoT Hub. This approach eliminates the need for programming or calibration within the production system’s PLC or associated interfaces and analytical tools.
  • Standardized test data following the AquaCloud Sensor Data Standard, enabling compatibility with other datasets in AquaCloud, or direct use by clients who have implemented the standard themselves.
  • Graphical dashboards providing real-time visualization of time series and data flow, and optionally, integration with AquaCloud for sharing or internal data management.
  • Simplified monitoring through interfaces that are more user-friendly than those of existing equipment
  • Potential for cost-effective integration of manual sensor measurements and aggregated data into the facility’s time series records
